The structure and principles of calligraphy and letter art are taught to encourage an understanding and exploration of calligraphy and lettering art, with design, materials,colour, book making and illustration.
Workshops are supported by demonstrations, discussion and individual tuition, suitable for calligraphy groups, adult education workshops, and art workshops.

W O R K S H O P S Can be arranged in a variety of topics, varying in length from a day, a weekend or longer. I welcome inquires, and am happy to discuss any of the workshop topics listed below with you, to suit Calligraphy groups, adult education or art groups. For traveling distances over 100 miles I would prefer to run 2 day and longer courses.

Exploring, developing and changing shapes of linear capitals inspired by both traditional and contemporary, to create linea calligraphic patterns considering shape, tone and space, then experimenting adding colour to create texture, with a practical reminder of the properties of each
of the mediums we use.

An exploration of letter and word shapes, working initially with a pencil on skeletal forms then
introducing you to the ruling pen, cola pen and folded pen to create fresh and unique textural lettering

Working with pencil and other tools to create Capitals that dance, referencing both historical and contemporary capitals to develop your own dancing style and character.

Working with and exploring calligraphic letter forms considering image, colour and design to
become the background stage for your book, where you will weave more words considering page design and calligraphy to construct and cover your book.... to stretch the imagination!

Making, exploring and designing book pages considering placement, context and relationship

Introduction to Illustration
Have you ever wanted to combine illustration to enhance and add life to your card designs or lettering design but not known how to start? or been unsure of how to use a range of materials?
In this practical workshop day or weekend workshop we will consider the properties of each medium i.e. pencil, coloured pencils, watercolour pencils and watercolour, with a selection of interesting basic drawing/illustration techniques to help you gain confidence and your own illustration style.
No calligraphy or drawing experience is required.
Expressive calligraphic Lettering
This workshop will look at ways you can develop attitude in your calligraphy, by exploring, discussing and working on letter and word shapes to create colourful calligraphic textures ideal for use in contemporary calligraphy, using a variety of tools.

Troubleshootingsurfaces
Not too sure what paper to use? or what paint to buy, or how to use the materials that you have already? In this practical workshop we will consider, discuss and explore various writing surfaces looking at the best way to work with them using pencils, watercolour pencils, watercolour and gouache with a practical reminder of the properties of each medium, colour mixing to get the best lettering for your nib on a variety different papers.

Decorated Capitals
A day workshop that introduces the decorated capital to beginners.
Taking inspiration from the historical Celtic Capitals, Lombardic Capitals and a Modern Capital.
During the workshop there will be step by step guidance not only with your capital but also tools
and materials.

Formal writing
Back to basics with script, working from a historical foundation but keeping in mind that we are calligraphers in 2012. Studying in depth and developing your own individuality.
